Brady Brady was a BIG hit in Columbus Ohio on February 25th. It was a great night - all with the goal of inspiring young hockey fans to get excited about reading. Thanks Blue Jackets! It was fun again this year.

A Big Draw in Northern Ontario

Illustrator and Brady Brady Co-creator made his way through schools in Northern Ontario recently. Sacred Heart in Espanola, St. Mary's in Massey, Our Lady of Fatima in Elliot Lake, St. Mary's in Blind River, and Holy Family and St. Bernadette in Sault Ste. Marie all hosted Temple for presentations in reading, writing and illustrating.

Montreal Welcomes Brady Brady at the Salon du livre!

It was a lot of fun in Montreal! Brady Brady appeared live at the Salon du livre in downtown Montreal on November 17th and 18th. Brady the mascot worked his way through the thousands in attendance. The crowds were directed to one of the book booths where Co-creator, Chuck Temple illustrated and provided original drawings for those who happened to be in
"the right place at the right time."

Chuck Temple and Team Get a Great Gowling Greeting!

Co-creator and illustrator of the Brady Brady series got a Great Gowling Greeting in Ottawa last month! Temple, along with Marketing Director Alison Lafrance and Brady Brady himself landed at W.E. Gowling Public School on December 15th. It was an amazing day. The book-reading, and illustration demonstration culminated in several cartooning workshops in the afternoon. Your enthusiasm and hard work was evident - transforming the gym into a life-size hockey rink was so very cool!

Mary Shaw Tours The West During TD's Canadian Children's Book Week!

Mary Shaw, author and co-creator of the Brady Brady series toured Saskatchewan during TD Canadian Children's Book Week, November 18 to 25, 2006. Mary, along with the Director of Marketing for Brady Brady, Alison Lafrance, visited schools, and libraries and made special appearances at events throughout the province. The pair generated a lot of excitement. Throughout the week, Mary shared her insights on being a children's author and hockey mom. The author's first tour through Saskatchewan was a resounding success. The following is a summary of the trip in Mary's words:

Saskatchewan was everything I knew it would be. Endless blue sky, fields upon fields of cut wheat, more cows than I could count, and hours upon hours of straight road. But what I didnt expect was the huge number of young hockey fans in every city I visited. Never had I seen so many hockey jerseys all worn to make me feel welcome, and pumped up about sharing my love of reading and hockey! Chants of Weve got the power, weve got the might rang out in schools from Regina, Beechy, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Stoughton, Moosimin, Yorkton and Indian Head.

After a hours of driving through the prairies (and trying to avoid hitting deer or coyotes), nothing was better than being greeted by smiling kids willing to help carry the Chester board, Brady Brady books, or even my coat,  into their school library or gym. The fatigue of hours of driving between prairie towns immediately went away when I met the excited kids who had been waiting just for me.

Many times I entered schools to find colourful pictures of the characters in my books lining the hallways.   I tried to sign them all so I could admire each one. The students made me feel like a celebrity with their letters, drawings, and cheers. A school even had my name and picture in lights!

Die-hard Brady Brady fans made there way to the beautiful library in Moose Jaw on a chilly Sunday afternoon, and others to a cozy night time reading at the library in Estevan.
I shared a special pizza lunch with some students at the Moosimin library complete with a hockey logo tablecloth.

I listened to numerous stories from students on their favourite hockey

players, attempts at building a hockey rink or naming their dog Hatrick like in the book.

The best story I heard was from a dad who told me that in his sons first season of playing hockey, the young lad had already scored two goals in the game, so his dad yelled out to him, Jace, one more goal and you get a hatrick! And the little guy replied, wide eyed, I get a dog!?

Many, many thanks to the teachers and librarians who went the extra distance for the kids to make my visit extra special - especially Shameem, Hanna, and Tammie. And a special thank you to Coordinator Peter Curtis and to my 'chaffeur' Alison Lafrance.

Brady Brady: Game On!

Brady Brady made an appearance (Again) at The Annual Maple Lodge Farms OMHA Hockey Festival in Whitby. The game was competitive and fun with both mascot teams sharing in scoring opportunities. At the end of the day, the competitive spirit was put aside for the annual "team photo." It was a fun event for everyone who attended. We know Brady is looking forward to it again next year. He'll be training in the off-season - keep your head up, Chuck the Puck!

Brady Brady Goes to Hockey School!

July was an exciting month for Brady Brady. You may not think of the summer as being a time to play hockey, but remember, Brady Brady is passionate about the sport. Brady Brady had a chance to make an appearance at the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Skills School. In one of the off-ice sessions, the young players were treated to a guest appearance by illustrator, Chuck Temple and none other than Brady himself! (the mascot)

One of the Brady Brady books was read to the participants followed by a  presentation on developing skill. Did you know that it doesn't matter if you are trying to become a better hockey player, a better reader or a better illustrator - practicing is the key to improving your skill in anything?

Not only did Brady Brady have a chance to meet all the participants of the hockey school, but he ran into a celebrity or two as well.

Brady Brady, and Co-Creators, Mary Shaw
and Chuck Temple Appear In Ottawa!

Over nine hundred students got a chance to discover the world of Brady Brady in Canada's capital. Students in both the primary and junior/intermediate divisions listened while author Mary Shaw read one of the Brady Brady books. Co-creator for the series, Chuck Temple followed up the reading with a discussion on how books are made and how an author and an illustrator work together to create a book. Temple then demonstrated the fundamentals of creating and drawing.  Students watched with interest as he formed some of the characters in the Brady Brady series right before their eyes!

The presentation culminated with an appearance by none other than Brady Brady (the mascot) himself! Students frantically converged on the character to get a rare chance of communicating with the well-known, sports-loving seven year old. When the morning was over, students left knowing a lot more about reading, writing and illustrating! It was a memorable day.

A Brady Brady BUZZ in the BIG League!
Brady Brady made his debut at an NHL game weeks ago with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The sideshow to the hockey game was  an appearance by Brady Brady, as he made his way through the crowd and mingled with Blue Jacket fans. An on-ice appearance complete with a Chester shoot out led to some pretty cool Brady Brady prize packs.

Pre and Post game signing sessions were a hit with everyone! Luke Richardson, as well as Mary Shaw, author and co-creator of the Brady Brady series were on hand to satisfy autograph seekers.

Game night was only part of the Brady's trip to Blue Jacket country. Students at a local elementary school were treated to a multi-media Brady Brady book reading and discussion with Mary Shaw.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Brady Brady continue to work together in an effort to highlight the importance of reading and literacy in youngsters. The latest Brady Brady release, Brady Brady and the Puck on the Pond has been purchased for distribution within the Blue Jackets Literacy program. Thank you Columbus Blue Jackets! You made Brady Brady's first appearance at an NHL game a memorable one!

Captured on Film: The Columbus Appearance!

Our roaving marketing team managed to get some great photos documenting the events in Columbus. No question, there was a lot of excitement generated by the appearance of Brady Brady himself. A great opportunity was enjoyed by young hockey fans when player, Luke Richardson and author/co-creator of the Brady Brady series, Mary Shaw signed autographs.

The excitement,  wasn't limited to Nationwide Arena, however. Brady Brady and the Blue Jacket mascot, Stinger made a visit to a local elementary school.
Some great photos capture the fun of the day!

Brady Brady himself was able to take a moment to enjoy his first NHL hockey game.

Pond Hockey
and Parry Sound -
We Just Had to Be There!

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (
OMHA) together with Parry Sound Minor Hockey held its first annual Pond Hockey Tournament this year on February 18. Although warm weather in the month leading up to the event resulted in the cancellation of the pond hockey games themselves, that didn't spoil the fun. Young players in the area were able to participate in a Brady Brady book reading by Chuck Temple (co-creator for the series) as well as a demonstration of drawing. It was a great opportunity to introduce the latest Brady Brady book release, Brady Brady and the Puck on the Pond. Even more exciting was the fact that the reading event took place in none other than the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. "Not only has Bobby Orr endorsed the entire book series, he is without question, my biggest hockey hero" said Temple.

The thrills of the weekend were not over for Temple. Later in the day, he participated in a celebrity hockey game - playing on the same team as some former NHL greats like Dave Burrows. "I think the pinnacle of the weekend however, was being coached by Bobby Orr's father, Doug Orr."

Thanks, Parry Sound. Hope to see you again next year.

Northern Ontario Tour - Awesome!
Thank-you Keewatin Patricia District School Board - (An Illustrator's Perspective)

Story by Chuck Temple It was intense but it was fun! Six months ago Theresa Lambert  contacted us from beautiful northern Ontario and asked if the author or illustrator of Brady Brady would be interested in doing a school book tour. We were excited about the prospect but could only agree if numerous schools in the area signed up. Lambert's call to schools was well received. The literacy teacher from the Keewatin Patricia District School Board had begun an on-going labour intensive planning session that culminated in a seventeen school, three library, ten day adventure. After months of planning, the great northern Brady Brady tour started when I touched down in Kenora on Sunday, September 25th.

Students across the Keewatin District had the opportunity to participate in one hour sessions that included a reading from the popular hockey series as well as discussions on the book-making process, drawing fundamentals and sessions on cartoon creation.

Every school I walked into offered its own way of welcoming Brady Brady into their domain. It became obvious that schools had prepared well in advance for the visit. In fact, it was obvious that schools and students embraced a Brady Brady taylored curriculum involving language, art and many other subjects as well. At times, my appearance seemed like a bit of a side show. Schools were adorned with student-created Brady Brady posters, stories, word walls and pretty-much anything you could possibly think of -  everywhere! It was simply amazing to see. The following is a brief overview of the incredible reception I received for Brady Brady in northern Ontario.

Evergreen
and Valleyview Public Schools were the first
stop on my  tour. Students at both locations enjoyed a Brady Brady book reading as well as a lesson or two on the art of cartooning. Those who wanted a more detailed experience in the art of creating cartoon imagery followed me over to the Kenora public library at the end of the school day. It was there that I focussed on many of the details associated with the cartooning craft. It was obvious that there were some real creative kids in this lot!

Tuesday I was off to Lakewood and Keewatin Public Schools.  Students sat  intently  in  a  packed gym as I projected the larger-than-life image of the book, Brady Brady and the Runaway Goalie. Primary grades chimed in when it came time to read the infamous team cheer "we've got the power, we've got the might" - now so familiar as a staple ingredient in the Brady Brady books.
There wasn't a lot of time to hang my hat. Day three of the trip, Wednesday, September 28th, would include my final appearance in Kenora - culminating in a visit at King George Public School. It was a great way to finish in the Kenora area. It was obvious that there were a number of Brady Brady fans in this school. Like preceding schools, I encouraged students to practise, practise, practise when it came to their reading, writing and drawing skills. With little time to spare, I loaded up the van and started down the road to my next school.

Vermillion Bay was the next stop. Primary and Junior students at Lillian Berg Public School participated in an afternoon Brady Brady session. A tight schedule didn't allow for a lot of conversation between presentor and students at the conclusion of the day.  Questions wouldn't go unanswered, however, as a list of questions came to my laptop in the hotel several days later. Thank-you, Lillian Berg public school!

Thursday, September 29th, I rolled the Brady Brady tour into the community of Ear Falls. It was obvious from the moment I walked into the school, that a Brady Brady buzz was in the air. It is so very hard to describe how captivating and motivating it is to see the effort and energy that many schools put into preparing for a visit like this. As they say, a picture ... or pictures are worth a thousand words, so rather than write about it, how about you SEE what students at Ear Falls Public School did to prepare for this day.

The  trip wouldn't have been complete without a brief appearance to the grade one class. Just as I was packing up to leave, a student requested my presence in the classroom where he and his fellow class members could show off their latest cartoon creations. I think I may have given them too much information.  Guess who's going to be looking for a job in the near future? Great, great art gang! Keep it up!

The afternoon in Ear Falls was spent working with some talented students at Northern Eagle High School. Many of the students at this level had significant artistic ability. My goal wasn't to alter their existing artistic methods of creating, rather to simply convey the illustrative approach and the distinct
style associated with the Brady Brady brand. Students could then adapt ideas to fit their work. I don't know what their latest creations look like, but I do know there were some talented participants and that they appeared intent on picking up new techniques.

It was now a quick trip north...(even farther north) to destination Red Lake. The tour offered so much to this point. Every school offered enthusiastic students, a welcoming atmosphere, motivated and dedicated teaching professionals and if that wasn't enough, the drive between scheduled stops provided breath-taking fall scenery.

On Friday, September 30th I arrived at Red Lake Madsen Public School - located just past  the most northernly stop light in Ontario (one of the facts made known during my trek to this part of the province). It was apparent that students of all grades had been preparing for this visit for weeks. I was greeted by two enthusiastic students, eager to help and proud to show off their grand school. Two presentations - one to a packed gym of primary students followed by another presentation to the junior division. Both groups expressed their appreciation for what they had experienced. I was treated to a tour of the school immediately following the second presentation. Brady Brady artwork (some of it seen above) was seen everywhere. I was about one week into the trip and as one school led to another, I was finding it increasingly difficult to leave. A morning or afternoon visit simply didn't seem enough to give to the great students of Keewatin District who had worked so hard. When I finally did look at my watch, I realized I was leaving the school only minutes before my next presentation was to begin at Golden Eagle Learning Center in Balmertown. I knew I might have some explaining to do when I got there.

It was raining when the doors of the school swung open. "WELCOME TO GOLDEN LEARNING CENTER, Chuck!"  I was in awe the moment I stepped foot inside the front door of the school. It was jersey day and that served as a colourful and inspiring backdrop for all of the Brady Brady art - everywhere! Banners hung from ceiling to floor and it was obvious from the minute the Envoy rolled into the parking lot that the schedule was shot, but it just didn't matter! The Balmertown group simply rolled out the red carpet! It was a great afternoon of reading, drawing, touring and socializing! Balmertown Golden Learning Center...you will never be forgotten. It was incredible!

Northern Ontario Tour - Week Two

Week one of the tour ended on an incredible high! The approximate three hour travel time from Red Lake to Dryden offered some solitude from the five hours of speaking and it provided a great chance to scout the area for possible wild life sightings - something I was told to look for. I wouldn't be disappointed. On the trip south a large black bear made his way to the shoulder of the road. Ten minutes later , my car crested a hill - looking three hundred meters ahead on the center line - a large moose galloped directly towards me. I fumbled for my camera, thinking this would be a great addition to the website report about the tour. You don't see a photo of a moose anywhere do you? I'd be happy to email the great photo I got of my dashboard, however.

The weekend offered a chance to meet up with Theresa and the rest of the  Lambert family. Jason Lambert (husband of Theresa and incredibly nice guy) offered to tour me through the Weyerhaeuser Pulp and Paper Mill. It was a great opportunity to see the production process that goes into the making of paper - the actual paper that the Brady Brady books are printed on. Weyerhaeuser was in integral part of the Brady Brady tour, purchasing books for the schools in the district. Thank you, Weyerhaeuser and thank you, Bonny Skene...you contributed to a great cause - promoting literacy to youth - and you were instrumental in making the Brady Brady tour  a huge success!  Monday morning, it was off to Sioux Lookout.

Day nine of the tour offered a bright fall day and scenic trip north. On this day, students from Sioux Mountain Lookout School and Hudson School were combined for the presentations.
Afternoon sessions allowed groups to participate in cartooning workshops. Students appeared to enjoy learning about the fundamental steps in creating their own cartoon characters. I took them through a step-by-step process that revealed the evolution of a cartoon from the foundation circular structure to the detailed final image. The hope was that the process would allow  students to complete the works and develop new ones beyond the instructional session.

The tenth day offered me the chance to stay fairly close to home - at least what had become my new temporary home in Dryden. Pinewood and Wabigoon Public Schools welcomed me with open arms. Once again, students were prepared for the day - by choosing to wear their favourite hockey jerseys. It was obvious that teachers and students had worked hard in preparation for the visit. Students had taken the time to research biographical information  about myself and Mary Shaw. The information was presented in the form of a student chant - part of which is shown here. Thank you, Pinewood for your efforts - they were, and continue to be, inspiring and motivational!

I got my first taste of a northern Ontario winter on the second Wednesday  and Thursday of the trip. Ignace was the next stop. The drive was  a little unpredictable. It was raining hard and the wind had really kicked up.  The temperature  hovered around freezing so I had some genuine concerns about the last days of the schedule. If the weather turned really bad, it would throw a very tight schedule out the window. It was concerning because so many people had worked tirelessly to make it all work. The Ignace Public School started with a one hour workshop in cartooning with grade nine students. Presentations were made to the primary students in the morning. At lunch a staff member reported that the highway back to Dryden had been closed and that it was likely I would be making myself comfortable in Ignace for the night. I wondered how we might have to restructure the schedule to fit in the remaining appearances. By mid afternoon, following the junior presentation and the grade seven and eight cartoon workshop, it was made known that the highway was back open and that the schedule would remain as it was set... at least that's what I thought.

On Thursday, October 6 I woke up to ten centimeters of snow on the ground. It didn't seem like much of a problem because the final appearances of the trip were all in the Dryden area. An early morning phone call from Theresa suggested otherwise. The snow had caused bus cancellations and as a result,  only a small portion of the student body would be in attendance at New Prospect Public School - the home base where the planning for the tour had all begun. Potentially, six months of hard planning had now come down to the potential of a big disappointment. Immediately, salvage plans were in the works - ultimately leading to a schedule flip where Riverview Public School (a school that is not as dependent on bus transportation) would turn Thursday into a Brady Brady day rather than Friday. The plan fell into place seamlessly - at least that was my impression. I can only guess about the back room scramble that took place that day. A huge thank-you is fitting, considering the planning and re-organization that took place from both schools.

Considering the amount of last-minute re-scheduling, the day went exceptionally well. Once again, presentations were made to the primary and the junior students. Cartooning workshops took place in the gym in the late afternoon for the grade eights. After the day at Riverview, students from the Dryden area, who had not participated in cartoon workshops, were invited to the Dryden Public Library for a one hour class.

The tour was quickly coming to a close. It had been a memorable experience. For most who participated in the presentations and the workshops, I hoped that they had truly gained something. I also couldn't help but think that the opportunity had been made available only because of the incredible, hard work of those who chose to initiate it. It really all started with the purchase of one Brady Brady book in a book store, a number of years ago by a very dedicated and motivated literacy teacher in Keewatin Patricia District School Board. The final day of the trip, and probably fitting, would take place at Theresa Lambert's home school. Although Theresa was not present on this day, her equally dedicated collegues were there as well as a large enthusiastic, appreciative student body. Here are images of the day from New Prospect Public School.

Thank you, Theresa, Ali and all of the students and staff in the Keewatin Patricia District School Board. You really did make my job very easy.
